Griffin’s Top 13: Your Biggest Insurance Questions, Answered
Ready to Take the Next Step with Griffin Insurance Solutions? Whether you’re new to Medicare, considering a plan change, or have more questions, we’re ready to help.
01 When should I enroll in Medicare if I turn 65?
You can enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which spans seven months: the three months before, the month of, and the three months after your 65th birthday. For example, if your birthday is July 15, your IEP will run from April 1 to October 31.
02 Am I automatically enrolled in Medicare if I am already receiving Social Security?
If you received Social Security benefits for at least four months before turning 65, you’ll automatically be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B. If not, you’ll need to sign up manually.
03 Can I keep my current doctor when I enroll in Medicare?
It depends on the plan you choose. With Original Medicare (Parts A and B), you can see any doctor or specialist who accepts Medicare. Medicare Advantage plans may have network restrictions, so check if your doctor is included.
04 What’s the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans?
Medicare Advantage (Part C) is an all-in-one plan offered by private insurers that includes Part A, Part B, and often Part D, along with additional benefits like dental and vision coverage. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans work alongside Original Medicare to cover out-of-pocket costs, but do not include prescription drug coverage.
05 Does Medicare cover dental, vision, or hearing services?
Original Medicare a and b does not, so you would like to add a stand-alone dental and/or vision, or a dental, vision, and hearing policy (all in one). If you choose a Medicare advantage plan, often dental, vision, and hearing is included in the policy. If you choose a plan that does not cover dental, vision, and hearing, you can add that coverage separately.
06 Is there a penalty for not enrolling in Medicare when first eligible?
Yes, if you don’t enroll in Medicare Part B when first eligible and don’t have other creditable coverage, you may face a late enrollment penalty. The penalty is a 10% increase in your Part B premium for each 12-month period you could have had Part B but didn’t sign up.
